The screen is probably the most important part of any car computer system (carputer) as this will have to incorporate a touch screen for ease of control whilst driving, so the position is very important. When I first started thinking about a carputer a few years ago there was not much in the way of touch screens that would fit nicely in a car. Unless I put a 15" TFT in the car, it was not going to happen and even then it would have meant me using a keyboard and mouse.

Now Liliput have created a 7" TFT touch screen that fits nicely into all cars and comes with all the bits you need to get started, including a bracket if you wish to mount the screen on your dashboard. In my case, I decided not to use the bracket as I wanted the screen to look 'factory fitted', so I ripped out the clock and accessory tray (see before photo below) from the center console and used the double-din space to fit the screen.

Before the installation...
...and after!

Step by step guide to fitting the Liliput TFT touch screen into my Honda Accord Type-R

The Liliput TFT touch screen being taken apart.
Liliput touchscreen.
The front panel of my touchscreen casing glued into place
Dismantling the Liliput screen.
Make sure you don't loose any screws!
I cut a hole in the original panel just big enough to hot glue the front TFT panel in place.
The rear of the lcd panel also glued in place
Using U-Pol body filler to blend the front panel into the console.
Using grey primer to find the imperfections.
Using a hot melt glue gun, this is nicely fixed from both the front and back.
Use car body repair filler (easy sand) to smooth in the panel.
I used primer to find any imperfections.
More and more UPol body repair filler to fill in those pits and gaps.
After much sanding, I used U-Pol filler primer to get a really nice finish all over.
More sanding before the matt black paint is applied.
Another layer of filler, and plenty of sanding!
One I had it as smooth as possible, I used filler primer then sanded it some more.
After 2 days of sanding, and filler primer it was time for the matt black paint.
This is the first coat, and you have to allow plenty of drying time for each coat.
The Liliput TFT touchscreen is now installed in the Honda Accord Type-R center console.

This is the first coat, and you have to allow plenty of drying time for each coat even if it's dry to touch.
Finally it's fitted inside the car. Perfect!

U-Pol Easylite Polyester easy sand filler
U-Pol High #5 filler primer
Halfords Matt Black spray paint
Wet & dry sandpaper, from 240 - 1200 grit

7" Liliput TFT touch screen from www.cartft.com

All these materials come pretty cheap, and the matt black paint from Halfords matched the shade of my car interior perfectly. One word of warning though, I initially tried using Hycote Wrinkle Finish black paint which I found in a local car spares shop. Don't use it! It ruined my work, and I had to sand it down and start all over again. I thought it would be a good idea as the cap was a matt black and the label had a picture of a car interior, but when it dried it looked like it has been in a fire (all bubbly).
