The computer itself makes the brains of the whole system, and once installed in the car I like to think of the whole car being a super powerful mobile media beast! (ok, I'm being sad now).
Here are the specs:
System: Shuttle xPC SK43G, on-board VGA, On-Board Realtek 6 Channel audio, Firewire, USB 2.0, TV Out, and On-Board LAN.
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2500 512 L2 Cache (Barton)
RAM: 512Mb DDR 400
Hard Disk: 200Gb Western Digital 7200rpm
DVD-ROM: LG 16x52
WiFi: Netgear WG311v2
Building the Shuttle xPC is actually very easy as it's well designed and put together, and out of the box it's ready for you to fit the RAM, CPU, DVD drive, and hard drive. With such a small case, cooling is very important, so be sure to use the thermal paste that is supplied with the Shuttle or even better, buy some decent silver thermal compound. I was actually surprised to see a heat sink for the processor included with the case, and thought I'd have to use my own heat sink and fan. What you get is actually pretty impressive, as the heat sink carries the heat through four pipes, into a rear mounted heat sink and fan.

I've just put an LG DVD-Rom drive in at the moment. Maybe a DVD Writer later! |
